Life Coaching: choosing options

From analyzing options to setting objectives

After the self reflection phase it is time to look ahead. The questions in this phase are about what makes you happy and what you would like to achieve. Not only in one life area, but in all areas you define (ie. family, carreer, health, relation, spiritual, etc.).

It is important to evaluate all life areas. That way you have the full picture. There are various reasons for this to be so important. One of the most obvious ones is that we want to get the most out of our life, not just out of one life area. When only focussing on one life area, we might lose track of others, which can have a negative impact. Think about workaholics, who only have sight of carreer and even forget about giving attention to their family. Not surprisingly this leads to burn outs and other fysical and mental problems.

Also choosing an option requires to think about the impact on other life areas. For example, someone might dream of living on a farm, while the partner loves the city. Having a life plan only focussed on housing, might have a negative impact on the relation.

For life coaching to be successful, it should be efficient and effective. By having an overview of all areas, we can prioritize and identify the easiest ones to tackle. That way life improvement comes quickly and further life improvement is triggered.

Life coaching and objective setting

After the options have been evaluated and chosen, the options need to be translated into goals. Goals are things to be achieved based on the option choosen. Goals are still not concrete enough and should therefore be translated into objectives. Objectives should be SMART. This means specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound.

With the objectives in place, a plan with milestones and actions can be constructed.
