Life Coaching: keeping momentum

Life coaching vs. new year's resolutions

One of the most important things in life coaching is keeping momentum. New year's resolutions are exactly missing this. In the beginning a resolution might feels good, but as weeks go by the objectives slip and little is achieved. Life coaching is very different in many ways.

Holistic Life coaching

Life coaching is about self reflection, goal setting, planning and and execution in a holistic fashion. This is very different than a simple end of year statement like 'I will stop smoking'. It means thinking about the various life areas and managing life and objectives in a balanced way. And the way to actually get things done is by keeping momentum and focus.

Momentum & Focus

There are many ways to keep momentum, below we have listed the ones we feel are most important as they have proven to be very effective:

  1. Plan regular sessions in your agenda. Many life coaches plan monthly or quarterly sessions. One way of making your dreams come true is not to lose sight and keep yourself motivated.
  2. Retreat: have your sessions in a calm place, where you won't be disturbed. Although life coaching is really down to earth, reflection and goal setting require a calm environment.
  3. Put your plans on paper (or online through our free tool). There is no more powerful way then writing things down.
  4. Review what has happened since the last session. What has been achieved, what were the setbacks, were there any barriers, etc.? Do not forget to celebrate all progress.
  5. Think about ways to overcome barriers.
  6. Plan new actions to be taken until the next session. Re-plan if necessary. Ending up with an unachievable plan is contra productive.
  7. Take actions serious. Add / update actions and milestones in your agenda/calendar.
